A little experiment: I have a photo of three trees and here I've overlapped them a few times.
I'm worried I may have made the mistake beginning to fill in the background the way I have ...
I think I'll concentrate on the tree trunks and revisit the background later.

I love the winter snow kind of vibe. Maybe just add a couple more pieces of the background where you need to show the contrast with the lightness of the trunks but leave the rest? Having the background as negatively painted shapes rather than painting the background looks really interesting. Have you had snow in your area? We have just had lots of rain sadly. I'd love a sprinkle. Best wishes.
That's good advice Lisa. I really want to add as little as possible to the background... And then decide if I want to add some details to one or two trunks. We did have snow which is unusual here at the shore, and even more unusually it's stuck around because the temperatures have been below freezing for about 2 weeks!
