In class today I worked on two more Pigeon Key scenes. I started out with too much water, and the paper stayed frustratingly wet throughout class. Each of these needs a bit more work--exactly what, I don't know; but they don't feel done to me--but I'm going to let dry thoroughly before attempting anything!

I googled Pigeon Key and found lots of images of this very tiny island in the Florida Keys. There are several aerial photos that look like your watercolors. Did you spend time here? I can see how the beautiful colors of the island can make YOU paint and paint. I, however, cannot do that. Keep that brush moving!
ReplyDeleteThese are wonderful. You've really captured the light beautifully! Loved your walk down memory lane in the last post. Got me to looking at old stuff too. We've come a long way, baby!
ReplyDeleteNever thought to do that, Don, thanks! We go to the Florida Keys once a year, if we can. Last year we stayed in a place at the foot of the Seven Mile Bridge, very close to Pigeon Key, which is one of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteThanks Tracy. Sometimes I wonder about how far I've come, but I try not to think so linearly (lets me off the hook)! I'm glad you enjoyed my little nostalgia trip, though!
Beautiful work -- really luminous and clean!
ReplyDeleteLaura you really captured the bright reflecting light of sun at the beach and the way the colors mix in the sky over the water.. lovely...
ReplyDeleteTHese are beautiful!! Followed you here from Gwen's site.
ReplyDeleteYour work is so light and fresh...

Ah, your work is so fresh, Laura. I haven't done anything to speak of since high school, so reading and seeing your memories and work from then is cool. If I were to start back into it, I'd try drawing and watercolors. A class is probably the best way to go, yes? Maybe in the summer or fall. Silly me, I have a studio Don fixed up, and I only write in it. Even have my grandma's old easel, just waiting for an artist.
ReplyDeleteThanks for coming over for a visit! And how COOOOOL: Carlos and Yeats!! That made me happy, esp. since WCW has been an influence on me too.
these are gorgeous! i like them just as they are - the bottom one especially makes me want to get in the car and drive south :)
