premature anticipation

(7x11)
It's been awhile. I don't know why ... Well, I haven't been painting; there are always so many "reasons" I can come up with, but I guess they don't matter really, since it seems to happen periodically, unavoidably.
My excuse this time is just being busy making money. I'm self-employed and have a compulsion to finish whatever I'm working on; so that, even when I put it away for the day, I either can't relax or my brain is too tired. Also, I have so many things I want to paint--too many, especially my Chinese lanterns, the one success of my garden this year--which leads to paralysis.
But, I'm going to New Mexico later this week, for ten days!, to paint. So maybe I've just been saving my energy?
So, back 10/13, with, I hope, some new work.

  1. It happens to me, too. I've been busy painting windows and woodwork. I really need to get back on a normal schedule. Thanks for your visit & kind words. Have a wonderful painting trip!

  2. Hi Laura,
I think I understand a bit about your "reasons." It is very challenging to juggle so many good things in one's life, and art is something that really, really matters, yes? And, it takes space on both sides of the activity to do well. That said,

    You. Know. Watercolor.

Sometimes, I do believe our subconscious minds need time to rest on art stuff. One thing I noticed was that if I did work that I did not like, the next work seemed more successful, as though I had to get the "bad" work out of the way.

You're gonna have a great time in New Mexico. I'll be back to see how it inspired you and how it informs your new work.

    Best wishes!

  7. The flowers is so tender and transparent, one can hear the aroma.
I know the situation so well. Self-employed, making money thing is also distracts me from painting and when work finished, I just can not return to painting again, some sort of dullness hold me at the border and does not allow to burst into joy of painting. But I do not worry, this is my life.
Wish you great time in New Mexico!

  10. Laura, I was thinking about you just yesterday, realizing you'd been gone a while and knowing you're probably busy - glad you stopped in and caught us up on things. Have a fantastic trip to NM and bring back lots of clean desert air and red canyons and future paintings waiting to come from your brush :) You are missed when you go away for weeks at a time but I do understand you have a life other than this blog! ha ha

  11. As usual, beautiful, clean colors. you never use too much paint. to me, your watercolors are what i envision "watercolor" is suppose to be. i know a couple of artists that get up and paint, paint, paint all day. I don't know how they do it. Having 3 kids makes me have to squeeze painting in. Have fun on your painting trip!

  12. I love this delicate flower painting!
We all know the feeling of being unable to concentrate on and enjoy painting when there are other things and worries we want to get over with. I hope you relax on your painting trip and take full advantage of it!
