Way too much fussing with the reflections in the water ... I wish I had just painted it all in go and then left it: which is what I'll do next time. I am pleaseed with the grays in their wings though, considering how I am usually unable to make gray! This gray (I know Robin will want to know) was made with cobalt blue, aureolin, carmine.

Nicely painted gulls, Laura. Great reflections.
ReplyDeleteThe reflections could be fresher but we've all done that - the grey and that pink blush are perfect, though. I'd do this one over and go in and out with the reflections like you wanted to do but your hand took over :) You know, when you have a mistake or overwork something, it gives us meer mortals hope for ourselves!
ReplyDeleteSometimes a simple composition and close crop make the most beautiful of paintings. I think this is just exquisite, Laura. So very beautiful and the reflections were worth the hard work; they are perfect!!
ReplyDeleteYou can make 100's of greys out of just two colours - All made from colours opposite each other on the colour wheel. So, blues and oranges, or yellows and violets, or reds and greens. The wings of the Seagulls I did some time ago were made up of Cobalt Blue and Cadmium Orange (I think, if I remember correctly). That worked very well.
ReplyDeleteAnd you can make so many tones of the same grey just by adding water or pigment. Anyway - I am sure you already know that, but just in case you didn't, that is something I learned, so i thought I'd share.
I love your gulls and I love the vibrant colour of the water! It's lovely :0)
This is a beautiful painting, Laura. It caught my eye immediately when the thumbnail popped up in my blog list. Great summer colors.
ReplyDeleteI like it very much! Love the gulls!
