wip: mia, day 2

I can see in this side-by-side how getting just a few lines a bit wrong can thros off the whole likeness, like the outline of the left side of her face--I let it bow out too much (but I think I can fix it).
I tried to get the baby teeth in there but really didn't like they way they looked ... I think I still need to broaden the smile a bit.
Or maybe start again ... I'm feeling that this portrait doesn't capture Meezie.

  1. As someone who is struggling with a painting of an 8-year-old, I know how easy it is to overwork the skin and you've kept your's fresh and light. It may not be exactly matching the photo but that only matters if you intend to put them up side-by-side and show them that way. Did you capture the essence of her? Her laughter? Her wispy hair? Her cute round cheeks? I think so.

  3. Oh, Laura, children are so hard, I think--you did beautifully--it totally looks like her! I agree that it's really hard if one tiny thing is off--I learned that I need to put a drawing aside and go back to it a day or so later so I can see where I've done things like that, but this is great!! Love it! I need to get back at it...Well done! This and your last post, too!

  4. Take heart, Laura. Maybe you do what I do and paint them a year or two older than they actually are. I can see a likeness there so you are on the right track.

  5. She is just so sweet! I think the likeness is there, though her expression is different - she looks a little more serious/wistful in yours, but it's a lovely painting. You make me itch to try portraits again!
