This is a scene from one the more beautiful places we visited in the British Virgin Islands: funky and fabulous Trellis Bay. A great place to shop, eat (chicken rotis and Caribe beer!), and lay around in hammocks.
I did this in 20 minutes, from a photo, and discovered a new use for the 20-minute challenge: as a way to approach a subject that intimidates you. With the mindset that I'm only (!) spending 20 minutes, I think I plunge in a little more recklessly, or less timidly anyway.
Now I've at least approached the subject and so I hope diminshed my fear of it ... and if I'm lucky maybe I'll even find something here to carryover into a more developed painting.
Katharine Cartwright of Twenty Minute Challenge is going to be taking a break from administering the site. First, I have to commend Katharine and everyone else who has administered a site that people can contribute to. What a task--I have no idea how it's done, but I know it must be time-consuming. Katharine and others have provided a real service ... and a lot of fun and opportunities to learn and meet other painters. Thank you, Katharine!
Update: Good News! Katharine has found a brave volunteer to contunue administering the TMC blog, Teri Casper. Thanks, Teri!

Laura, these 20 minute paintings suit you to a T, this is fresh and gorgeous and captures such a carefree, fun holiday spirit that I can't imagine you'd get with a more developed painting. I love it and wish I was there!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind words, Laura. It's been fun administering the TMC blog, but I won't have time in the future since I'm travelling around the country to teach watercolor workshops. Hope you continue to enter the Challenge in the future!
ReplyDeleteI love your vivid colors!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a beautiful painting, Laura! I love the colors and the boat shape is superb! Great job!
ReplyDeleteThis is gorgeous!!! and I love your thoughts on approaching an intimidating subject -- just 20 min.-- just DO it!!
ReplyDeleteI hope someone will take over the TMC challenge site -- I have no idea how to do a site like that either but I'll be sure to check out the challenge
great idea on the how to attack a painting with ease and no time to worry.. yes the tmc has been fun .. hope it can be kept up at least in our own homes..
ReplyDeleteVery fresh. I can tell you enjoyed your self painting this. I'm sure it brought back some fun memories for you also.
ReplyDeleteAnother of your lovely "Now, why don't I do more of that sort of thing" paintings, Laura.
ReplyDeleteI love the painting, too, and I think you are right, approaching a subject with a time constraint gives us a freedom from perfectionism and fear. Why don't we do it more often. I'm sorry to hear that TMC will be discontinued, I just discovered it.
ReplyDeleteYou asked about my yellows, Auroelin, Lemon, Cadmium and Quin gold are my current favorites.
A beautiful painting. I love the vibrancy of the colors.
ReplyDeleteGreat watercolour!
