Two little self-portraits I'm trying out for David Lobenberg's Global Self-Portrait Love In: 9/10 is the deadline for sending in a portrait of yourself in a hat.
The top one, from a photo taken by myself on the boat, was much cleaner and fresher before I kept poking at it!
The bottom one is from a photo taken about five years ago in the Keys.

Portraits must be about the most difficult subject to complete in a painterly manner. You have done this beautifully with no apparent reliance on line work to bring out detail -- and no apparent 'poking at' either! I think it's wonderfully fresh.
ReplyDeleteHi Laura,
ReplyDeleteI really like both. The top one feels like you're there. I want to know what you look like, and it seems like you're present in the top one. I like the bottom one for the sunny mood. So both are just wonderful.
You always do great work.
Take care,
Barbara
I like them both but the top one is much cleaner and I really get a sense of you - whether it looks just like you or not, it's clean and good colors and shadows and love the hat!
ReplyDeleteFabulous!!! The top one is my fav.
ReplyDeleteWatercolour portraits (for me) are so difficult, but my gosh you've got them taped. I also love the top one!
ReplyDeleteLove the top one best!
ReplyDeleteOh, these are great, Laura! I like each for different reasons. The bottom one is so fresh and captures you so expressively, and the top one is a pretty good portrait to show a close up "you." I love both of the hats--great idea for sp's!
ReplyDeleteYou are so brave to do this. They are both good, but I really like the pensive expression in the top one.
ReplyDeleteBoth of them are wonderful..your paintings are so fresh and happy.
ReplyDeleteYup, I vote for the top one too. Mysterious and looks like out of the movie Casa Blanca. I already sent mine in and I had two on my blog asking folks to look at them too...I finally decided on the purple one posted July 14. ginny.stiles.blogspot.com even though it is sort of outside the box.
ReplyDeleteTop one is my fav, too!
ReplyDeleteI love the first one. Simple and I like your smile!
ReplyDeleteI like these self portraits. It's so hard to do effective portraiture, and especially of oneself. There is just the issue of getting a good photo from which to work, if you work from a photo. Then there is the issue of what you do with the thing afterward. I have done a couple, and feel silly looking at myself on the wall. But as for yours, I quite like the top one, especially the way the hat shades your face. It looks like you, I think.
ReplyDeleteYou really captured something of yourself in both portraits. They both look like you.
ReplyDeletegee I love these, especially the one with the baseball cap, my lovely pal.
