I've fallen behind on my plan to do a drapery study a month. (See January and February's studies.) I started this in March, but abandoned it because the paper was uncooperative--the colors wouldn't flow or lift.
Yesterday I thought I'd give finishing it a try--what could I lose? Though it didn't turn out as I'd hoped, it's not as bad as I thought it would be either ... And now I can moveon to my April drapery study.
From "Four Poems for Robin" by Gary Snyder
A Spring Night in Shokoku-ji
Eight years ago this May
We walked under cherry blossoms
At night in an orchard in Oregon.
All that I wanted then
Is forgotten now, but you.
Here in the night
In a garden of the old capital
I feel the trembling ghost of Yugao
I remember your cool body
Naked under a summer cotton dress.
Hi Laura,
ReplyDeleteI like the painting and the fabrics it depicts. I just love blue and white fabric. You've done a super job of painting this cheery drapery.
Take care,
Barbara
I think this turned out great - fabric folds are so hard to draw or paint. I love the shadows.
ReplyDeleteFolds and drapes are a challenge. I think it turned out well. Your shadows are transparent and delicate and don't overpower the fabric.
ReplyDeleteI love the freshness. You really have mastered the art of not "overworking" a painting. That is something I always struggle with...
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge blue and white fan. I just think it's such a soothing, calming combination. Love the touches of warm pinks here, too. I think fabrics are hard, but you seem to have created this with great facility. Lovely poem, too, Laura!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful painting...I loved the cool drapery.
ReplyDeleteI love these colours too - I have bed-linen in blue and white stripes which is sadly a bit threadbare now! This makes a great abstract study when you click on it and get the zoned in enlarged version - almost a landscape.
ReplyDeleteWonderful drapery study. So crisp and yet soft in places... great job!
ReplyDeletebeautiful poem and drapery study.
ReplyDeleteForgot to say, your traveling sketches, with simple materials are lovely
