Triad: ultramarine blue, quinacridone sienna, raw sienna
I signed up for another 6-week session with Marie Natale in Ocean City. Today was our first day. we spent the time practicing making blended washes with triands, trying to achieve an all-over glow to then use as an underpainting. We didn't start out with any particular landscape in mind, but let the washes suggest the subject.

My god! You're becoming Turner!
ReplyDeleteDon't you just love taking workshops!! I started a workshop today with Don Andrews! Love his wet into wet fresh approach, and very colorful as well ... I will try to post something from our class tomorrow...

Wow, thanks, Suzanne! I love Turner and wasn't thinking of him, but maybe subconsciously ...? I'll have to get out some Turner books and look them over tonight.
ReplyDeleteI do like workshops, Laura. I especially like meeting the other painters--I get inspiration from them and some practical ideas too. For instance, today one of my classmates brought in some paintings she'd done previously, and she was carrying them in a folder she made by taping together, along one long edge, a thick piece of cardboard and a mat. I thought it was ingenious: keeps the paper flat and the edges protected, and also serves to "show" them to their best advantage for critique.
I've seen Don Andrews's work--I look forward to seeing what you do in the workshop!
Ooh - these are so exciting, Laura - such a release from references and preconceived ideas. Your interpretations of the underpaintings into landscape are just beautiful. I want to do your workshop!!
ReplyDeleteYour paintings glow with light and color... I look at them and get the feeling that you enjoyed the painting process.
ReplyDeleteGreat work - I love the tranquility of these.
ReplyDeleteI'm also writing today to say, "TAG! You're It!"
This is a fun little thing that the bloggers do, to get to know each other and increase good traffic to your blog.
This is how it works:
1. Put a link in your posting to the person who tagged you (that would be me)
2. List seven (7) unusual things about yourself.
3. Tag seven (7) other bloggers at the end of your post and comment on their blogs to let them know.
Hope you'll want to play!
Love this one. Agree with the Turner comment. Lovely colors and nice to see how the painting developed. You nailed it.

I figured there weren't enough Lauras in this comment thread, so I decided to leap in! I agree with Suzanne and the comparison to Turner---very luminous and loose and lovely. Great work, Laura.
