beginning studies

(11x15)
I'm going to plan a larger, more complex still life; so far, all I know is I'd like to include my favorite silk flowers, Chinese lanterns and bleeding hearts (maybe columbine too). Want to do a few studies of each first--figure out how they're put together, what colors to use, and how to paint them (wet in wet, wet on dry). Just a couple of tries today, and a few additional dabs--judicious, I hope--to yesterday's painting to try to set back the cluster of flowers on top and bring forward the ones in the middle.

  1. Wonderful flower studies, Laura, I can't wait to see the larger still life you're planning. I hope you will include columbines, but that's just selfish of me, because that's one of my favorite flowers :) I like the chinese lantern in your study especially, such graceful shapes.
I love what you did with yesterday's; those few judicious dabs brought it from nice to wow!!

  2. What size are you working on, I know I'm also guilty of not posting sizes, just curious. Love the studies.

  3. Mineke: I love columbine too; tulips and daffodils are in the market, and they're both great fun to paint. May be distracted from my plan to do a more sustained piece of work while they're available!
Bill: I like it when other people post sizes, and I'll make an effort to do so. Have thought of doing so, but, though I have many rulers, I never have one handy ... I'll put one next to the computer! The Chinese lantern study and the hydrangea are both on quarter sheets (11x15); that's a size I'm very comfortable with. I often fold that in half (7.5x11) for quick things, like the landscapes I posted a few days ago. I seem to let my mood and time constraints, rather than the subject, determine the paper, which is probably not the best way to do it!!
