ned

(9x12)
This could use a bit more tweaking, but here, with apologies to his parents, is my portrait of my friends' firstborn, Ned. The likeness is not great: Ned's eyes are more almond-shaped (these look like his mother's eyes!) and the jawline is maybe too narrow ... And of course, there's my perpetual downfall of not knowing what to do with a nose! (Perhaps the result of my lifelong ambivalence about my own nose?)
I remember distinctly when Ned was baby: the most beautiful baby you ever saw! And now he's a handsome fourteen-year-old.

btw: Marge Chavooshian, who I've been taking a weeklong summer workshop with for (gulp) twenty years, will be in town this coming weekend for a workshop. Despite being signed up for two other workshops this month, I can't not go see Marge! So, three workshops in a month: I don't know if  my stamina and my bank account will survive, but I'm going for it.

HI Laura I think he looks great. You did a good job. People are difficult.. keep going. I don't do too many people.. you inspire me to try more. Diana

Lisa recognized Ned immediately. And Ned gave it a big thumbs up. And, as you know, he's a little vain. Bravo.

As to over-booking your studies, relax and enjoy all this good stuff now. Later, you suffer with all that mundane money and work stuff -- or not.

Thanks, Mike--I'm so pleased. You know, it occurred to me that though the likeness to Ned is a bit off, if you surrounded the face with dark, curly hair: it'd be Lisa! Maybe without realizing it, I painted the mother into the boy!
Next I'll find the hidden "Mikeness" in William.
But I'm especially glad Ned approves!

I looked at that portrait & thought "Wow, I could never do that!" It's great!
Three workshops in a month? Good for you. I'm looking forward to meeting you at Marge's. I'll be the one making a mess of a house....

Hi Laura, It may not look like the ned you know but the colors are vintage you.
Workshops galore... an exercise in creative brain drain. Have fun!

laura, i think this looks good. i have been told it is much harder to do a portrait of someone you know vs. a stranger. i like how you stayed loose and just captured the essence of the apologetic feeling. i like how you are so honest, too. thanks for your comment on stoli doli, it is not my favorite, that is why i am so surprised to recieve positive comments on it..

Well, with all this training, you're going to be growing by leaps and bounds, Laura--and you already are showing those signs! This is great! Well done. Take a bow!

Three workshops in one month? Oh, I hope you don't overload...and I know you'll come away knowing exactly how to do noses from Ted's workshop :)

He does look really great! He reminds me a little of my own son who is nearly fourteen now. I must have a go at this :0)
