drapery 2

(7.5x12)

I think I had resolved, at the beginning of the year, to set myself the task of doing a drapery study every week. My first drapery study was posted 1/12 ... so let's call it a monthly task.
This time, to my white cloth, I added a patterned one from Carolyn's. She had three stacks of cloths taller than I am, and after she died, her sons let us, her students, take them.
I had never painted this cloth, which was a favorite of Jennifer's--she likes bold patterns and yellow-green-red color schemes--but I guess she'd already painted it enough times and left it for me.

Really nice colors, did you mask the stripes?

Thanks, Cathy. I didn't use masking (which I generally try to avoid--too lazy!). Some stripes, like the red ones, I painted all at once and let dry before anything next to them. for others, like the yellow and pink stripes, I didn't want such a hard edge so I painted them then ran a brush with clean water between the stripes to fuse them.

Wow--great job, Laura! I think fabric is difficult to paint, and you did a beautiful job on this. Nice to read how you accomplished the look of this.

I admire how you are always challenging yourself with different subjects. A great way to improve one's painting skills. Great job on this one.

Such a difficult subject - material, creases, pleats, folds. You've painted the materials beautifully and skilfully.
The colours in the striped material are just gorgeous.

A good resolution! One I keep making and breaking. The rendering of drapery is a beautiful thing. You are well on your way; beautiful colors in your shadows!

Lovely colors! Great job on painting the folds and shadows. I love that thin strip of gold or silver (ribbon?) on the fabric, it shimmers.

wow- really beautiful. Like A Brush with Color said- nice to read how you did this, and like Watercolorist said, I too, admire how you challenge yourself.

Laura, you are an inspiration. I guess one must actually practice painting fabric folds in order to master it...

I always want to skip the practice part. I'm also impressed by how you continue to challenge yourself.

Your drapery study is amazing, colorful, intricate, and altogether appealing. It has a quality I admire in that the image is recognizable as reality, but it also feels abstract. Brava!
