DSFDF

(11x6)

This week's challenge from Karin Jurick's Different Strokes from Different Folks blog, the Jefferson Memorial at night; entries must be posted by Weds. 1/21 and that evening, Karin'll post another reference photo.
If you haven't yet, visit the blog--it's amazing. So many people participate, I don't know how she does it!
Her challenges are that: challenging. She suggested that getting the values right from the start would be the key to painting this subject. I fell short there--this is really as dark as I can get it seems!

I really like this! I think my favorite parts are the stars, and the dark shadowy area to the right. It has a mysterious feel to it. It has a lovely deep quality to it. Great!

Yes this is fantastic. It was a difficult subject which I didn't take up. You've captured it beautifully.

Amazing watercolor, Laura. You are inspiring. Maybe I will try this, after all.

The area on the right is my favorite too, Claire--the paper was just the right degree of wetness.

Thanks Liz and Carol--I did find it difficult and I kind of messed up on the columns, but, no matter.

Hi Ruth. I can't take credit for the subject matter; Karin Jurick always has something that seems timely!

Thank you, Nancy. It is amazing to scroll down through all the paintings on the DSFDF site, humbling and inspiring.

Hey Laura,
Nice rendition...I love the colors you used. To answer your questions..the paper is in a sketch journal and is by Canson, so I think it is Montval paper and the size of the painting is 5"x8"

Laura, this is lovely.
The long narrow composition really sets it apart. The darks are plenty dark, no question that it's night, and what a lovely shade of purple. Nice that you made the building a warm shade of orange gold, makes for a great complementary color scheme. And the way the trees on the right melt into the starry sky....nicely done!

I think the sky looks wonderful Laura, it really glows against the peach rotunda.

Your piece is beautiful. The stars make you dream and the building makes you hope and the landscape and cropping keeps it all together.
